TaxSlayer Bowl projections begin for selection committee

The TaxSlayer Bowl team selection committee met for the first time this week to begin narrowing down football teams from the SEC and ACC, Big 10 or Notre Dame that will play in Jacksonville, Fla.

With three weeks left in the season, the selection committee knows that big matchups and conference championship games will likely change team rankings and the teams available to play in the bowl.

“You can’t project out. You have to look at what’s available right now,” said Rick Catlett, president and CEO of the TaxSlayer Bowl. “You have to conduct the process just like we will do on that final Sunday.”

Selection Sunday, or Dec. 6, is the final determination of the top four teams in the nation according to the College Football Playoff rankings. Just a few hours after teams are selected for the semifinals and four other games played on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the TaxSlayer committee meets to make its picks and continue discussions with school athletic directors.

Some of the teams under consideration to play in the TaxSlayer Bowl include LSU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, FSU and Penn State.

“It’s not unusual to have major changes in the next three weeks, especially once you get to rivalry weekend,” Catlett said.

The TaxSlayer Bowl kicks off at noon on Jan. 2. It will air on ESPN.
