2014 Gator Bowl: Georgia vs Nebraska

 

The Dawgs and Cornhuskers are set to meet in Jacksonville at the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl on New Years Day at noon.


The Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Big Ten Conference representative, finished their regular season with an overall record of 8-4. This match-up will mark their second appearance in the Gator Bowl Classic, where they hold a 1-0 record after defeating Clemson in the 2009 Gator Bowl.


The Georgia Bulldogs, the Southeastern Conference representative, also has an 8-4 record entering the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. This will be Georgia’s 4th appearance in the Gator Bowl and their first appearance since January 1, 1989 when the Bulldogs beat Michigan State 34 – 27 in Coach Vince Dooley’s last game as Georgia’s Head Football Coach. Georgia has a 2-0-1 overall record in the Gator Bowl.



How Each Team Was Selected


SEC:


For 2013, the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl was third in the selection order of bowls with SEC ties, coming after the Outback and Chick-Fil-A Bowls. LSU 9-3 was selected for the Outback Bowl after Missouri and Alabama were selected by BCS bowls. The Chick-Fil-A Bowl selected 8-4 Texas A&M, allowing the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl to select 8-4 Georgia.


Big Ten:


This year the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl was fourth in the selection order of bowls with Big Ten ties, coming after the Capital One, Outback and Buffalo Wild Wings Bowls. Wisconsin was selected for the Capital One Bowl after Ohio State and Michigan State were snapped up by BCS bowls. The Outback Bowl selected 8-4 Iowa over 8-4 Nebraska. The Hawkeyes beat Nebraska, which makes the selection on the field make sense. The Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl selected 7-5 Michigan, allowing the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl to select 8-4 Nebraska.
